How Mucosal Mucin Shapes Bacteriophage Host Interactions and Resistance Evolution in Yersinia enterocolitica

Using an in vitro mucosal model, investigators showed that mucin significantly influences encounters between Yersinia enterocolitica and a mucus-binding bacteriophage. Mucin-conditioned bacteria supported higher phage production and exhibited reduced biofilm development after infection. Genomic analyses of resistant variants revealed adaptive changes linked to virulence and cellular communication, suggesting evolutionary tradeoffs.
