A network-based analysis of interchangeable defense modules in Pseudomonas aeruginosa revealed more than 500 candidate phage defense systems. Testing of selected candidates identified three functional systems, named Dionysus, Ophion, and Hercules, which disrupt distinct stages of phage infection. The findings demonstrate how modularity can accelerate discovery of bacterial antiviral defenses.
