Using ultra-deep long-read sequencing, researchers characterized genomic heterogeneity in a multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain recovered from a left ventricular assist device infection. Rare structural variants occurring at frequencies as low as 0.0122% were detected, revealing previously inaccessible subpopulations and generating new hypotheses regarding biofilm formation, adaptation, antimicrobial resistance, and interactions with phage therapy.
