Tracking Antibiotic Resistance Gene Spread Through Maggots and Their Receptor Bacteria

1 min read

Maggots were found to be widespread carriers of antibiotic resistance genes across multiple contaminated environments. The study revealed that ARGs occur throughout maggot body regions and persist into adulthood in houseflies. Experimental evidence confirmed plasmid-driven gene transfer, and identified Providencia rustigianii and Providencia alcalifaciens as primary bacterial recipients of ARGs.
